Established in 1984, MAGA has grown to become Sri Lanka’s largest and most trusted construction company. The company has completed over 600 multidisciplinary projects, including some of Sri Lanka’s most iconic structures. MAGA’s contribution to national development has included over 4000km of roads networks, water projects benefitting over 3.5 million people and residential, commercial and healthcare facilities spanning over 21 million square feet.

At the heart of MAGA’s ethos lies a quality-centered focus and strong commitment to sustainable development. The company’s integrated business model draws on the depth and breadth of experience within the company, and provides clients and end-users with guaranteed value, timely delivery, and long-term durability across a wide variety of engineering and construction projects. As such, the company has strived to integrate environmental sustainability with its core business, constantly pushing the envelope with class-leading green buildings.

The following award-winning projects were delivered during a challenging period for the construction sector, with the debilitating impact of COVID-19 at its center, and is testament to all stakeholders who tirelessly worked towards their success despite many obstacles.

Faculty of Technology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura

The faculty provides undergraduates with a host of higher education opportunities in the fields of Engineering Technology, Biosystems Technology and ICT. It aims to support Sri Lanka’s developing and diversifying economy and the rising demand for STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) professionals. The complex features energy-efficient lighting and open designs that maximize natural light and ventilation. Minimizing its environmental footprint, sewerage and waste treatment are managed within the premises, whilst rainwater harvesting has reduced costs and provided irrigation. The project was a Design & Build joint venture between MAGA and ECL.

Southern Expressway from Matara to Hambantota (Section 1V)

The Southern Expressway is Sri Lanka’s first E-class highway, connecting key urban centers. Extension of the highway to Hambantota was initiated in 2015. Under the main contractor CATIC, MAGA carried out a key phase of this extension, constructing 8.5km of a four-lane expressway between Matara and Beliatta. The extension has improved the flow of goods and people across the Southern Districts, reduce congestion in the biggest cities, and act as a catalyst for the improvement of industries and services required for socio-economic development.

Galagedara-Mawathagama Water Supply Project

A large-scale water-supply scheme implemented by the NWSDB, the project provides pipe-borne water to an estimated 25,000 people in the eastern part of the Kurunegala District, and Galagedara, Paragahadeniya, and Mawathagama towns in the Kandy District. MAGA carried out the construction of a 1000m³ elevated tower; a 450m³ ground reservoir; and 170km long transmission & distribution system. The project’s extensive distribution scheme covered the fast-growing town, suburban and rural areas of these two important districts of Sri Lanka and will act as a catalyst for the region’s rapid economic development centered on agriculture.

Rural Roads in the Kurunegala District

As part of the Road Development Authority’s ADB-funded iRoad project, Maga Engineering completed the rehabilitation and improvement of 16 rural access roads amounting to 82.8km in the Kurunegala District. The third most populous District in Sri Lanka, Kurunegala is experiencing rapid population growth and urbanization alongside economic opportunity and development in the Western Province. Rehabilitation and improvement of rural roads across 06 key DS Divisions ensure communities in the area can share in the benefits of equitable development.

Rural Roads in the Kaluthara District

MAGA completed the rehabilitation and improvement of 42 rural access roads amounting to 94km in Kaluthara District across 07 DS Divisions by providing connectivity across towns and villages, creating the framework for greater economic development, simultaneously enriching local communities through improved access to education, healthcare and employment.

Rural Roads in the Polonnaruwa District

The company successfully delivered the rehabilitation and improvement of 18 rural access roads amounting to 49km in Polonnaruwa District. The roads ranged across 02 DS Divisions rich in natural and cultural heritage and farmed for agricultural production. These newly rehabilitated roads span heavily wooded regions on the borders of some of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful national parks, swathes of farmland and busy townships.

Rural Roads in the Anuradhapura District

MAGA successfully completed 17 rural access roads in the Anuradhapura District amounting to 83km in 06 DS divisions under Package AP1, and 12 rural access roads amounting to 77km in 06 DS divisions under Package AP2. These critical improvements to transport infrastructure in the area would improve mobility and increase access to Anuradhapura’s rich cultural heritage, while also stimulating economic development by increasing access, supporting inclusive rural development, and facilitating the involvement of rural communities in National development.

B157 Road from Southern Expressway to Madurugoda

MAGA completes 528-unit urban regeneration housing project at Kalinga Mawatha, Colombo-05

URBAN REGENERATION: KALINGA MAWATHA

Maga Engineering has completed construction of a new 528-unit housing complex consisting of three 11-storey blocks situated off Kalinga Mawatha in Polhengoda, Colombo 5.

The housing complex, named ‘Colomthota Sarasavi Uyana’ was opened on 15 December under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, on the invitation of State Minister of Urban Development Dr. Nalaka Godahewa.

Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Transport Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi, State ministers, secretary to the Ministry of Urban Development, the UDA Chairman and others attended the event.

Part of the Urban Development Authority (UDA) Urban Regeneration Project Phase II, the ‘Colomthota Sarasavi Uyana’ housing complex is one of a series of projects focused on improving the quality of life for under-privileged communities living in urban areas in Colombo City.

The UDA’s Urban Regeneration Project aims to construct 70,000 housing units for such communities living in underserved settlements and slums without access to basic infrastructure facilities such as clean water, electricity and sanitation.

Maga Engineering undertook construction and financing work of the complex in 2018 and successfully completed the project on schedule despite the COVID-19 pandemic, carrying out all construction activities as per CIDA health and safety guidelines for construction sites.

Situated on a one-and-a-half-acre property, the 11-storey housing complex was designed by the State Engineering Corporation (SEC), and features 528 housing units, a community hall, recreation and play area, Grama Niladhari (GN) post, police post, health centre, and management office.

Each housing unit at the complex consists of two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, toilet, and balcony. Furthermore, one block from the complex was fitted with all necessary components and accessibility features in order to accommodate hostel facilities for the University of Colombo.

The complex will now provide access to safe and secure housing within Colombo City for low-income communities from the Kalinga Mawatha area and unauthorised settlers displaced by developments to the Kelani-Valley railway line. As such, hundreds of families will now have access to formal land tenure, a decent home, and essential infrastructure and amenities such as safe public spaces, clean water, electricity, and sanitation.

Maga Engineering is a long-standing partner in Sri Lanka Government’s urban regeneration efforts to improve the lives of low-income communities living in urban areas. MAGA has successfully constructed four large-scale developmental housing projects providing housing to over 2,000 families, and is currently involved in further two projects that will provide affordable housing to more than 1,000 more low-income and middle-income families in Colombo.
