The Integrated Road Development (iRoad) programme is a mega infrastructure development project initiated by the Government to improve connectivity between rural areas, small and medium towns, and socioeconomic hubs; thereby increasing access, supporting inclusive rural development, and facilitating involvement of rural communities in National development. The first phase of the iRoad project focused on upgrading and maintaining around 3000km of rural roads across 06 provinces.
MAGA’s scope of work included rehabilitation and widening of existing roads; rebuilding shoulders to required widths; repair or rebuilding of culverts and bridges; and installation of necessary road markings, road-furniture, and guard-stones. Initial state of many roads with earthen, gravel, or macadam surfaces were prone to damage and flooding during the monsoon rains and routinely impassable for local communities. After rehabilitation, roads were upgraded to an asphalt surface with multiple improvements as experienced project teams worked closely with communities to address challenges and employed innovative engineering methods to protect vital transport infrastructure and local communities.
During the months of December 2018 to April 2019, Maga Engineering completed rehabilitation and improvement of 332km of rural access roads, and handed over new and life-bringing infrastructure to communities of the Anuradhapura District. These critical improvements to transport infrastructure in the area would improve mobility and increase access to Anuradhapura’s rich cultural heritage, while also stimulating economic development.

The iRoad project also seeks to improve the capacity of road agencies with respect to road asset management, project management, and contract administration, and will play a catalytic role in the sustainable development of Sri Lanka.
