Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) is Sri Lanka’s first international airport completed in 1967. Historically, BIA began as a UK Royal Air Force airfield in 1944 in service during World War II, and was later handed over to the Royal Ceylon Air Force in 1957.
A development program was launched to construct a new Runway, Passenger Terminal Building.
Phase I of expansion of the BIA was initiated in 1984 and included construction of new runway, taxiways, and aprons, and construction of a Passenger Terminal Building, Cargo Complex, Control Tower and Navigation Services and Maintenance Complex. Under the expansion project, Maga Engineering undertook a subcontract from Kajima Corporation of Japan to work on construction of a new Runway and miscellaneous Civil Works.
In later years, Maga Engineering was also involved in working on the Passenger Terminal Building Complex and the Air Lanka Catering Services Complex.
MAGA’s scope of work was successfully completed in July 1986.
