This 69km long road rehabilitation is a segment of the Maradankadawala – Batticaloa main highway situated in the north-central and eastern part of the island. Part of the World Bank’s US$ 198 million Road Sector Assistance project, the road was completed in December 2009.
The road runs across Polonnadurwa, Manampitiya and Welikanda, key agricultural towns of the Eastern Province long sustained through irrigation schemes. Therefore the conservation of resources, safety against soil failures and erosion, protection of water bodies and ecosystems (flora/fauna), sanitation and disposal of harmful construction waste were of prime concern. The Environmental Management Action Plan (EMAP) for the project was implemented under the watchful guidance of the World Bank mission and project consultants BCEOM who stressed the importance of controlling the environmental impact activities of the project from the outset.
